“I don’t see the point in a shower right before going back out into it,” Julie complained. She sat on the closed toilet lid while Evie washed.
“You’ve done the same thing, Miss Priss. You’re just impatient. I want another good shower before we leave another house with hot water. Aren’t you all ready to go?”
“All packed up and ready. Just waiting for you.”
The water went off. Evie slid the shower door open and grabbed her towel, then stuck her arm out toward Julie. “Gimme a hand so I don’t get overbalanced?”
She didn’t particularly trust her feet to gain a hold on the slick, wet tile – especially when her center of balance was thrown off so badly. It felt like just one more insult, no longer being able to depend on her body in the same way.
Julie gave her a short applause. Evie laughed despite herself. “Ass. Such a comedian. Help me out of the frickin’ tub already.”
Julie helped her sister step over the edge of the shower and onto a towel on the floor. “You didn’t wash your hair?” she asked.
“Of course not. I don’t want it to freeze to my head.”
“Well, you were in there long enough to.”
“Let me get dressed and I’ll be ready to go.”
“Hurry up. Everybody’s waiting on you,” Julie said snippily on her way out of the bathroom.
Evie hung the towels over the shower rails after drying herself. She hated to leave a mess, even if there weren’t really any owners of the house anymore to care.
She’d draped her clothes over a stool that sat in front of the bathroom counter. The warm cargo pants she had nearly worn out wouldn’t zip up anymore, and they hadn’t for a couple of months now. She pulled them on and worked with the zipper until its teeth caught halfway up and didn’t slide back down. Evie picked up a snug tee-shirt and put it on. It was one of Julie’s that she’d borrowed when wearing her bra became too painful. She put on a long-sleeved shirt and her long, dark blue sweater, knowing that even this plus her coat couldn’t completely ward off the cold that waited.
Evie sat on the stool and braided her hair tightly, winding it into a bun before wrapping her scarf around her head. She took the handgun off the counter and stood to tuck it into the back of her pants. She pulled the elastic band of a clean mask over her head and picked up her coat. Their bags were already downstairs, waiting with all the rest.
She half expected everyone to be standing around the front door and watching as she came staggering down the stairs. It was what Julie usually did. They were in the living room, though, waiting patiently. Evie felt ridiculous. On top of everything else, her newfound unsteadiness had made her self-conscious tendencies all the worse.
Picking up her messenger bag from the next-to-bottom step, Evie put the strap across her chest.
Adlai looked up and slapped his thighs.
